The Sacred Land of Nava Narasimha

Ahobilam is the only place where all nine forms of Lord Narasimha (Nava Narasimha) are worshipped. It is the holy abode where the Lord emerged from the pillar to bless His devotee Prahlada and slay the demon Hiranyakashipu. The temple complex is naturally divided into two parts: Lower Ahobilam (Diguva Ahobilam), which is at the foot of the hills, and Upper Ahobilam (Eguva Ahobilam), which is located amidst the dense Nallamala forests.

Upper Ahobilam closes early as it is located in a dense forest area. Visitors are advised to return before dark.

The Nava Narasimhas

Ahobilam is the only place in the world where Lord Vishnu is worshipped in nine terrifying and peaceful forms of Narasimha.

1. Jwala Narasimha

The fiercest form of the Lord. This is the exact spot where He emerged with intense anger (Jwala) and tore the demon king Hiranyakashipu apart.

2. Ahobila Narasimha

Also known as Ugra Narasimha. This is the main presiding deity of Upper Ahobilam. He appears fierce but grants profound peace to His true devotees.

3. Malola Narasimha

A peaceful and beloved form. 'Ma' means Goddess Lakshmi and 'Lola' means beloved. Here, the Lord is seen gracefully seated with Mother Lakshmi.

4. Kroda Narasimha

Also called Varaha Narasimha. In this highly unique form, the Lord features the face of a wild boar (Varaha) along with His Narasimha attributes.

5. Karanja Narasimha

The Lord holds a bow and arrow in this form. He appeared under a Karanja tree to bless Lord Hanuman, proving He is non-different from Lord Rama.

6. Bhargava Narasimha

Located near a sacred pond. It is believed that Lord Parasurama (Bhargava) performed intense penance at this exact spot to seek His divine blessings.

7. Yogananda Narasimha

After slaying the demon, the Lord calmed down and taught the great principles of Yoga to His beloved devotee Prahlada in this deeply meditative form.

8. Chatravata Narasimha

Seated under a Peepal tree (Chatravata). He is smiling and is believed to be enjoying the classical music and hymns sung by the Gandharvas.

9. Pavana Narasimha

Located deep within the dense forest. 'Pavana' means the purifier. It is strongly believed that worshipping this form absolves devotees of all their past sins.

Ahobilam Brahmotsavams

The biggest annual festival celebrated for 9 days usually in February/March (Phalguna month). The Lord is taken on different Vahanas (chariots) in grand processions.

Narasimha Jayanthi

Celebrated in May (Vaisakha month) to mark the divine appearance of Lord Narasimha. Special poojas, abhishekam, and kalyanotsavam are performed.

Monthly Swathi Nakshatram

Swathi is the birth star of Lord Narasimha. On this day every month, special Thirumanjanam (abhishekam) is performed to all the Nava Narasimhas.
